Message from the Dzongdag

Welcome to Paro Dzongkhag…

Paro Dzongkhag is situated in the north-western part of the country. It is located at an altitude of 2,250m above the sea level. It covers a total area of 1258.5 Sq. km. The temperature ranges from 26 to 14 degree Celsius in summer and 14 to minus 5 during winter.

The Dzongkhag has National Highway links to both Phuentsholing and Thimphu. Within the Dzongkhag, there exists a road network comprising of 122 kms highway and 93.5 kms of internal access road. The presence of good road networks offer opportunities for marketing surplus products to the major markets of Phuentsholing and Thimphu. Farmers also export apples to Bangladesh and India.

The only International Airport within the jurisdiction makes the Dzongkhag an aerial gateway to the Kingdom and it benefits the farmers and business owners of Paro Dzongkhag at large.

The Dzongkhag Administration has 17 Sectors, (Administration, Planning, ICT and Statistical, Agriculture, Livestock, Forest, Health, Land Record, Education, Census and Registration, Culture, Engineering, Accounts, Election, Statistical, Environment, Municipal Authority). These Sectors are manned by total staff strength of 175.

The Dzongkhag further extends to10 Gewogs, (Dogar, Dopshari, Doteng, Hungrel, Lamgong, Lugnyi, Naja, Shaba, Tsento and Wangchang) with 7118 households.

The Dzongkhag has 5 Renewable Natural Resources (RNR) Centers, a total of 22 schools comprising 2 Higher Secondary Schools, 2 Middle Secondary Schools, 8 Lower Secondary Schools, 3 Primary Schools, 3 Community Primary Schools, and 4 Private Schools (including one Higher Secondary School).

The Rinpung Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most impressive and well known Dzong is visible as a great white monolith from vantage points throughout the valley. The Dzong’s correct name, Rinchen Pung Dzong meaning ‘fortress on a heap of jewels’, now known as Rinpung Dzong, was originally built by the saint Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 1646 A.D.

It has been and still is the Executive, Legislative, Judicial, Religious pivot and the hub of developmental activities. The courtyard of the administrative sections is 6m higher than the courtyard of the monastic portion.

Above the Rinpung Dzong, stands the Ta-Dzong (National Museum) which houses a collection of murals, numismatics, philately, etc. After more than three decades, the museum has established itself not only as a huge tourist attraction but also as an institution of learning for both scholars and visitors.

With the launch of independent Dzongkhag website, it has helped the Dzongkhag and Gewog Administrations in performing most of its developmental activities effectively and efficiently. It has relieved us of tedious manual workload, thereby enhancing the four pillars of good governance i.e. efficiency, transparency, accountability and professionalism.

The stakeholders, beneficiaries and the web browsers can now have easy access to data and relevant informations regarding the Dzongkhag and the Gewogs, which is still under construction by simply logging into the Dzongkhag Website:

Further more if you wish to share your views/doubts and also wish to offer your suggestions/ feedbacks you can e-mail the Web Administrator at:

ictofficer@paro.gov.bt/rinpung@paro.gov.bt or post your feedbacks by clicking on the Feedback tab.

Lastly, the Dzongkhag Administration, Paro would like to acknowledge the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Information and Communication’s (MOIC) effort for launching the Dzongkhag website.

I wish all the browsers a very enjoyable and happy browsing of our website.
