Clean Bhutan Day

28th October, 2008 was observed as Clean Bhutan Day. A mass cleaning campaign was organized throughout the Dzongkhag. The school children, civil servants, corporate staff, Dratshang, and the town residents took part in the program.

Initiated and funded by the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature (RSPN) under the aegis of Clean Bhutan Initiative Program, the day was being observed to create awareness on the environmental preservation through waste reduction and involvement of support from all stakeholders.

Featuring the day, Dzongdag addressed the Tshongdue town residents on the importance of the day. He remarked: “Paro being highly accessible to international tourists and all kinds of important guests, it needs to be kept clean at all times. The very image of Bhutan is being determined by the image of Paro at first sight, and could possibly be the last impression of our country.”

The cleaning was carried out in the town area, road sides, clearing of clogged drains, river banks, and office/school premises.

The day was well received and most participants commented it was a commendable initiative on the part of the RSPN and its impact would go a long way in educating and creating awareness on the preservation of our natural environment through waste reduction, maintaining sanitation and therefore, a healthy populace.

Dzongkhag received Nu. 52,000 from the RSPN which was divided among 10 Gewogs, the town, Dzongkhag, hospital, schools for refreshment, purchase of implements and labour charge for digging waste disposal pits.

As per a government directive, the Clean Bhutan Day would be observed on 1st November from 2009 onwards.
