Rural youth run for Coronation, Centenary and Democracy |

On 4th October, rural youths from 10 gewogs under Paro Dzongkhag participated in the first ever Rural Youth Marathon organized by the Financial Coordination and Special Programs Committee under the aegis of the Steering Committee for Coronation and Centenary Celebrations, Paro Dzongkhag. The marathon was the first of its kind as only rural youths were allowed to participate.
The objective of the Marathon Race were to bring the local communities in the centre stage of participation in celebrating the great events taking place in the country, to cultivate sportsmanship among rural youths by encouraging their participation and to create awareness on the importance of good health among rural population by promoting sports and sense of fitness.
A total of 165 participants took part in the race. The distance for the race was 10 kms for both men and women. Prizes for 1st and 2nd winners (a refrigerator and a 21 inches colour TV set respectively) were purchased through the funds raised by the Committee from the business houses. The 3rd and 4th prizes (a paddle rice thrasher and a harvest ladder respectively) were organized by the Agriculture Machinery Center (AMC), Paro and the 5th prize (a seed package) was arranged from the Post Harvest. Druk Seed Corporation distributed free seed packets to all the participants.
From the men, Rinchen Dendup from Shaba, Chencho from Shari and Tshering Dorji from Lamgong gewogs took home the 1st, 2nd and the 3rd prizes respectively. The 4th and 5th prizes went to Jamyang and Nidup from Doteng and Dogar gewogs respectively.
For the women’s run, Chencho Dema from Shaba gewog took home the 1st prize. Lhamo and Phuentsho Om from Lungnyi and Dogar gewogs bagged the 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. The 4th and 5th prizes went to Chencho from Lamgong and Kinley Zam from Doteng gewogs.
During the marathon, refreshments were sponsored by Mika Tshongkhang (FCB), Sangay Wangmo Tshongkhang (FCB), Paro Canteen, K.Gangri Constructions and Damchen BOD.
The event turned out to be a major success.
