Roofs Blown Off

A strong storm occurrence in the month of February and March in different gewogs under Paro Dzongkhag blew off roofs of 52 households including the roof of Shaba Gup Office.

On 14th February,2009, 3 household roofs were blown off in Dopshari Gewog. Another 2 household roofs were blown off, one in Tsento Gewog and one in Lamgong Gewog. From 21st to 24th February;2009, 6 household roofs have been blown off, three each in Naja and Dogar Gewogs.

On 12th March, 2009, a total of 20 household roofs have been blown off, 17 in Tsento Gewog, 2 in Dopshari gewog and 1in Wangchang Gewog.

A team comprising of 3 members, Development Officer, RICB, a representative of RBP and the Revenue Assistant of Dzongkhag Administration, Paro assessed the damage at the site.

The team recommended for compensation basing on the magnitude of the destruction. However, the final claim will depend on the enrollment of house in the Rural House Insurance Scheme of the RICB.

In the case of Shaba Gup’s Office, the Dzongkhag Budget Officer, Planning Officer, Revenue Assistant and the Site Engineer made a site visit and found that the roof was completely blown off. It was also observed that only 20% of the CGI sheets can be reused while the other 80% has been reduced to mere scrap.

The team added that the wooden trusses have been broken and needed complete replacement.

The team added that the wooden trusses have been broken and needed complete replacement.

The team recommended the Gewog Administration to cover the top of the building with plastic using the Gewog budget to shield from rain and dust for time being and to dismantle the remaining trusses and CGI sheets and start working on re-roofing of the Office.

For the timing, the expenditure for the re-roofing works would be met from the budget for the renovation of farm road between Shaba Primary School and Drakarpo, which is an ongoing activity.

The Site Engineer was also asked to come up with the exact estimate so as to process the budget with the Ministry of Finance.
