Annual Paro Tsechu

Tsechu is an annual event in every Dzongkhag. In Paro Dzongkhag the annual Tsechu started on 5th April, 2009, coinciding with the 11th day of the second Bhutanese month and concluded on 9th April, 2009, the 15th day of the second Bhutanese month with the unfurling of the Thongdrel Chenmo in the early hours of the morning.

Tsechu is an important event for the Bhutanese people as it is said that witnessing the various mask dances and receiving blessings from it, one can get rid of one’s sins accumulated over the years and pave good fortune for oneself.

The Tsechu is also a day for gatherings and adornment of colourful and expensive attires. Families and friends come together on this day putting on their best attires and carrying varieties of Bhutanese cuisines for lunch.

Paro Tsechu is known far and wide for its sacredness and people from all over Bhutan make it a point to attend Paro Tsechu to receive blessings from the sacred treasure, the cymbal obtained from Nub-tsho-na-pata and the Thongdrel Chenmo.

The first day Tsechu was held inside the Dzong courtyard and the remaining days (i.e., from 6th to 9th April), the Tsechu was held outside the Dzong at Deyangkha, Tsechu ground.

Thousands of people gathered to witness the much revered Paro Tsechu. Paro Tsechu is also one of the major contributor to the tourism industry which is the backbone of our country’s economy, as it attracts thousands of tourists each year.

This year we have a record gathering of about 30,000 people on the 9th April,2009 to receive the blessing of the Thongdrel Chenmo.
