Brief Background on the Institute:

Background:

Despite many challenges, the Royal Government continues to provide free basic education. There has been continuous growth and enrolment at all levels of education. In 1960, there were only 11 schools with about 400 students. The number of schools increased to 556 and 169,313 students as of March 2009.

There has also been a significant increase in the number of students continuing their education beyond class X due to the increased enrolment at the lower and middle secondary schools. By 2009, there were 39 higher secondary schools including 12 private schools. The enrolment in higher secondary schools increased from 688 in 1996 to 11,815 in 2009. However, only 40 per cent of those completing middle secondary schools are able to continue their education at the higher secondary level due to limited space in the higher secondary schools and low percentage of students qualifying for higher education. As a result many parents are now sending their children to the neighboring countries to seek alternative or better quality education. However, such choices are not without risks as neither the parents nor the government has any control over the quality and safety of the children. Thus, it has become critical to expand higher education facilities within the country.

Utpal Academy offers a unique learning environment where learners have the opportunities to discover their potentials, explore their own interests, and build their capacities as lifelong learners. Our philosophy is that all children are born Buddha - they are pure in thoughts, are kind and compassionate, curious and enthusiastic, ambitious, and creative and eager to acquire new experiences and knowledge. It is our responsibility as educators to foster these feelings, and in doing so, to provide an educational experience to maximize each child's potential. We emphasize a well-rounded curriculum for our students in which special learning experiences complement and enrich the academic programme. We believe that all children's needs must be addressed intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. We strive to consider the whole child while providing a nurturing learning environment.

Description of the School:

Type of School:

The school caters to all students from Grades IX to XII.

Location:

The school is located at Rinchenling about 7 km from Paro town. It is ideally located to facilitate congenial learning environment. It is free from traffic noises and congestions, industrial development and wastes, has access to reliable power supply, safe drinking water supplies and public transport. The area of the school is safely fenced with gates for entry and exit.

Physical Infrastructure and School Size:

The school is housed in a previously hotel establishment which already had the following structures in place:

  1. Three cottages with 9 rooms with attached toilet and bathrooms.
  2. Four buildings with 38 bedrooms with attached toilet and bathrooms with geysers.
  3. Four meeting halls with a capacity of 300 people with attached toilets and bathrooms.

Three of these buildings has been used as hostels (for 200 girls), dining hall, meeting hall, administrative offices, a library room, an infirmary, computer lab, a canteen, a kitchen with store room, and a stationery room. An additional four storied building with 18 classrooms has been constructed at the same location. The games and sports facilities include a basketball court, a tennis court, and a badminton court. A parking space for 20 cars can be created within the campus.

The school will support inclusive facilities where disable learners (if any) will also have the opportunity to study. In addition, special attention will be given while constructing the school facilities to respond to the unforeseen natural disasters for safety of the children.

The physical standards and class strength will be as per the prescribed guidelines provided by the Department of School Education.

School Curriculum

Small classes and personalized attention provide intellectual stimulation while supporting each child's social and emotional growth. Our students master fundamental academic skills and progress through a challenging and relevant curriculum to achieve scholastic and personal success. In addition to the national curriculum, the school will promote the development of its students into well-rounded and caring individuals with a sense of social responsibility through enrichment programme. Local community service projects will be initiated. The school will foster innovation, creativity, enterprise, critical thinking, and character building as a cornerstone of our educational experience.

Our goal is for each student to reach their maximum potential. Each student will also develop a positive self-image and a sense of accomplishment while developing a love for learning and the tools for holistic development for lifelong success.

Human Resources:

The school will be manned by experienced teachers (both nationals and overseas). The human resource requirement will be trained through on-site training programmes. We intend to create more job opportunities by employing high school graduates and school drop-outs as regular staff.

Boarding facilities:

We expect 50% of our children to be from the local areas who will attend as day scholars and the rest will be provided with boarding facilities. We also intend to support children from disadvantaged groups (orphans and financially challenged family backgrounds). Boarding facilities will be necessary to enable and provide access to the school.
