During the 3rd Rabjung, a Kathog Lam from Tibet came to Bhutan and spread the doctrine of Kathogpa and established schools in the places he visited like Dyelgo, Shera Drak, Chedi Goenpa, Tshento Chhoedi Goenpa and Jagoen Goenpa. Among all these schools, Dyelgo Shera Drak was considered the most important in terms of Kathogpa education.
Towards the lower part of Paro, is a place, called Drakarpo. Guru Rinpoche had personally meditated in this monastery and many body prints still stands on testimony. Just below the monastery, one can see a cave where one has to pass through a narrow hole between the rocks to assess ones acts – pious or sinful.
According to Chhojugun Lhosar Ngagyen, in the 13th century, a Ngingmapa lama, Karzhi Rinchen Samten Pelzang dreamt of a khandrum, instructing him to go to a place called Zhungphug in Moen Yuel, where the treasures of Ugyen Rinpoche were hidden.
In the 6th Rabjung, Yung Toen Dorji, the disciple of Zuri Jampa Singye, who had super natural powers, came to Paro. He established his Goenpa at a place called Namthong Karpo and blessed it and had a number of disciples. While he was in the monastery he brought in a self-embossed statue of Chanag Dorji and also built a Chorten with sandal wood.
The monastery is located at a place which is about 3 hours walk from Taktsang monastery. It is believed that once, a lakh of angels descended in that place and left behind their beautiful footprints. Thus the place where the monastery is located is known as Bumdrag or “one lakh print on the rock”.
In the Wood Snake year of Fifth Rabjung, a divine princess Metok Seldon and Hermit Pawo Tagsham Chen from the Sacha family came to visit Bhutan, crossing Metey at Phari pass. They halted a night at Tsento Zangthang, which is now called Zamsar. In a dream at around dawn, Drupthop dreamt of many gods and goddesses flying in the space.
It is believed that before Guru Rinpoche left to subdue a demon, he spent several months in Chumphu monastery. While in Chumphu, he demonstrated several miracles such as: when he was sitting in the meditating position, he left his body and foot imprint on the cave. It is also believed that he created the divine image of Khandu Dorji Phagmo, which is visible today in the monastery.
After the death of Buddha in the year 1518, Earth Tiger Year, Kathogpa Tuelku Sonam Gyelthsen’s disciple Kencho Gyeltshen constructed the Lhakhang, Taktshang Yoelselgang, where he taught the script of Nyigma Gjiud Bum (Ngingma Script) to his disciples, and took care of the monastery in 660 A.D.
